K3 Week 1 phonics
A free K3 Week 1 lesson guide with Easy and Hard homework. No account or payment is needed.
ship · shop · chin · chip · fish · rich
Purpose and preparation
Notice sh and ch as two-letter spellings that each represent one sound. Blend and discuss the weekly words, with support matched to previously taught correspondences.
Use the lesson pictures, paper and a pencil or letter cards. Explain meanings first, including rich as having lots of money; it is not a judgment of a person's worth. Adult modelling supplies the individual sounds; whole-word recordings do not replace it.
Teach, practise and review
- Warm-up: show ship and chin. Invite pointing, naming or an action. Notice what the child already recognises.
- Model: point to sh in ship; say sh–i–p and blend ship. Model ch–i–n. Compare ship and chip: the first sound changes. Do not add extra vowels to the sounds.
- Supported practice: introduce ship, shop, chin, chip, fish and rich in that order. Notice sh/ch at the end of fish/rich as well as at the beginning of other words. Reduce to two choices when needed.
- Game: open the Our practice games slide and choose Tiles. Select solo or two teams. Model one turn, invite a response and return to the lesson. Return to the lesson after your game.
- Learning check: ask for a weekly word, its sh or ch spelling, and an attempted blend or spelling. Record the word and help needed. A game score alone does not establish mastery.
- Homework: choose the Easy or Hard page according to observed understanding. Spend a few relaxed minutes; stop if attention fades. Support the pencil and writing tasks when needed; record any modelling or prompts separately.
Participation: accept pointing, actions and home-language explanations. Challenge comes from recalling and explaining taught material, not adding unfamiliar words. Split the lesson across sessions when needed.

Check the written work
Keep this page separate from the pupil pages. Record whether an answer was independent, prompted, copied or modelled; this sample is not a mastery assessment.
Easy
1. Match: 1–B (ship), 2–C (chin), 3–A (fish).
2. Copy: ship, chin, fish. Support letter formation without completing the child's whole response.
3. Find: circle sh in ship, shop and fish; underline ch in chin, chip and rich.
Hard
1. Sort: sh — ship, shop, fish; ch — chin, chip, rich.
2. Change: chip; chin; shop.
3. Correct: fich → fish; rinch → rich. The two incorrect forms are deliberate spelling errors, not new vocabulary.
Support and next steps
Teach meanings first, including rich as having lots of money; it is not a judgment of anyone's worth. Use the lesson pictures and model the target sound when needed. Speaking practice belongs in the lesson; pupil homework responses here use pencil marks and writing.
Level choice should reflect the child's current support needs. Easy provides models and recognition tasks. Hard asks for more independent sorting, spelling changes and checking within the same six words.
